I have always loved the beach – the waves and the sand.  Long summer days spent by the ocean when you wake up in the morning, throw on a bikini and that is pretty much it.

As a professional conductor, I spend a lot of time in rehearsal rooms and dark theatres, so my downtime, where possible is spent outdoors in the sunlight and near the water. Enjoying days of sun, sea n’ sand makes for a simple wardrobe of swimwear, hats, sunglasses and Haviana’s. For years I searched for a type of garment that, until now, hadn’t existed.  I’d been looking for the ultimate ‘bikini cover’. Something small that dries quickly, that can be worn on a power walk around the bay, or thrown on to cross the esplanade for that much needed coffee. Over the years I have tried sarongs, sun dresses and a variety of beach cover-ups that end up more trouble than they’re worth.

It was on a holiday to Hawaii a few years ago that the idea of the ‘BEACHmini’ was born.  I was ‘people-watching’ and taking in what women and girls were wearing … or not wearing – as they made their way along the beach and to the shops.  What would be easy to throw on, but still be sexy, cute and ‘beachy’? Something you could wear over your bikini or swimsuit when you went for those short walks along the sand.  Around this time I was also working for The Australian Ballet and admired the beautiful ballet skirts the dancers wore in class and rehearsals.  This inspired me to imagine a mini skirt made out of swimwear Lycra^®, that’s easy to wear and easy to pack. Something that would dry over wet bathers, that would be available in a range of colours and patterns to work in harmony with any existing swimwear you already own.
